A Little About These Pages

First and foremost:

Everything is Copyright © 1996-2000, Pete Amass. All rights reserved. Reproduction by any means, physical or electronic, in part or in full, without the expressed permission of the author, is strictly prohibited.

Now, with the legal stuff out of the way, we can get to some of the technical and not-so-technical stuff.

  • All the images on these pages were taken by me over a period of years in my travels around the country and around the world.
  • All the images necessary to fill any blanks in these pages exist in my files and the missing names are somewhere in my notes and these will be added as time permits. Please be patient. If you know any of the missing names or see any typo's, please drop me a note
  • You may notice a significant difference in the quality of some images verses others. The best ones are from scanned transparencies. The not-so-good ones are from flatbed scans of prints and some prints scan better than others. My flatbed scanner, a Relysis AVEC 2400, seems to have a problem with skies and I'm not sure why other than it relates to the reflectivity problems common to all flatbed scanners. Some of the images have been "enhanced" to overcome this deficiency
  • I recently purchased a Nikon LS2000 to replace the old Minolta QS-35 slide/neg scanner which did not give me the results I had hoped for at least in part due to it's limited dynamic range (d-max of 3.0). The LS2000, with a d-max of 3.6, does a better job and the ICE technology does an amazing job of removing dust spots and fingerprints from the final image.

  • All images have been sized to 480 X 320 so they fit better in the browser client area and eliminate the need for scrolling. Keeping the images to a reasonable size also keeps the download time reasonable which is a consideration for many of my visitors who are in parts of the word where 56k modems and good line connections are scarce.

  • It is my intent to add text to go along with a lot of the images to show such things as the history, location and accessability of the subject but you'll have to be patient. I'm slow at research and my typing is even slower so I felt it was more important to get the images on-line first and add the frills as time permits.
  • All the images are uploaded as .JPG files to conserve space on the server. I prefer GIF89 interlaced images as they give the viewer something to look at while it's downloading but the price is 3 times the disk space. Like everything in this life, it's a compromize.
  • All the images are on the server as low-res again to conserve disk space and to discourage pilfering. If you would like 8" X 10" or 11" X 14" glossy reprints of any of the images, contact the author. If you're interested in hi-res scan data contact me and we'll talk about it.
  • There are literally thousands of slides and prints in my files of the subjects covered in these pages. I currently supply 4" X 6" matte prints at a nominal cost to a couple of artists for subject matter for their drawings and painting. I do, however, require a written promise to observe copyright restriction and not hand the prints around to their friends and fellow students and I request a photo of any resulting artwork. Any interested artists should contact the author.
  • Due to some abuses I've encountered, I have adopted a policy of discouraging "hot-linking" to any of my pages or images. I prefer that a link be provided to the front door ie. LanternRoom.com so that visitors will have access to all the images on the site rather than just the ones you select.
