About the Author

Authors Picture    Pete was born in Montreal, Canada in 1933. He was raised and educated in Montreal and, after graduating from Montreal High School, worked as a motorcycle mechanic for a couple of years. From 1950 to 1961 was employed at the Bell Telephone Company of Canada as a Dial Central Officeman and worked in a number of offices in Montreal and vicinity.

Pete was married to Beverly Grimble in 1955 and together they emigrated to Glendale California in 1961. Two children resulted from the marriage, Don was born in 1962 and now resides in Anahiem, California and is employed as a heavy equipment operator. Sheri, born in 1964, now resides in Durango, Colorado and has her own Marketing and Communications company specializing in web development. She originated and maintains the Downtown Durango Web Site where you can learn all there is to know about Durango and vicinity.

When he arrived in California, Pete went to work for the 3M Company in what was then the Mincom Division located in the City of Industry, California where he worked in manufacturing of Instrumentation Tape Recorders used by the spook boys at NSA and in the early Space Program.

3M built a new facility in Camarillo, California in 1963 and moved the Mincom Division and a Magnetic Tape manufacturing plant to that site in 1964. Pete moved with them and designed and built a home in the Camarillo Heights area above the city.

About that time Pete moved into the Engineering group where he developed the first low cost facsimile tape recorder for use by the News Wire services (AP & UPI). He was later involved in development of a number of special application tape recorders for use by the National Security Administration and voice logging recorders used by police departments. His work, over the years, resulted in him being issued 4 US Patents one of which was for a Digital Syncronization scheme which was used in the 3M Digital Mastering Recorder Systems. He also received FCC Certification for a Telephone line interface used in Voice Logging applications.

From 1980 to his retirememt in 1995 he was involved in the development and manufacture of 3M Data Cartridges which were then and still are, produced at the Camarillo facility which is now a 3M spin-off known as "Imation".

In 1969, Pete joined the Pleasant Valley Lions Club and served as it's president in 1978-79. He has held many positions in the Club and remains active today as the Club Photographer. He has a perfect attendance record for all 27 years with the Club. He has also been active over the years, in city politics and other local functions.

Now that he is retired, Pete keeps busy with his many hobbies which include:
  • Travel, usually in some way related to his interest in photography. He recently returned from a 3 week trip photgraphing lighthouses in Scotland and Wales. He has been to England a number of times as well as Ireland, Australia, Russia, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Sweden Jamaica, Canada and Mexico. He is a registered Flight Courier with IAATC and hopes to do some travelling as a courier in the near future.

  • Photography. Along with Lighthouses, Pete likes to photograph Covered Bridges, Old Mills, Old Barns, Steam Trains, Slot Canyons and Hot Air Ballons. He uses 35mm exclusively and has a number of Minolta's including X700's and a 5000i and 7000i.

  • Computers. Pete enjoys his AMD/900 mhz mainly for photo manipulation, web browsing and messing around. Though Pete has done some programing in the past, it's been a long time.

  • Cars. Pete began working on cars at an early age and in 1950 he restored and customized and hopped up a 1941 Merc Convertible which was probably the first custom car in Montreal. Since custom parts were not available, he had to learn to do his own bodywork (no "bondo" in those days) and fabricate such thing as fender skirts, hood scoops, an electric trunk latch and a dual exhaust system.

He presently drives a 1986 Mustang Convertible and restored a 1988 Susuki Samurai to use as a tow vehicle when he gets his motorhome. He also is in the process (very slow process) of restoring a 1970 Triumph TR6.

  • Woodworking. The current project involve making new workbenches and cabinets in the garage. Someday, maybe, just maybe, he'll get back to doing some woodcarving too.

  • Organizations. In addition to being a member of the Pleasant Valley Lions Club, Pete is also a member of the U.S. Lighthouse Society, the Society for Preservation of Old Mills (SPOOM) and the Covered Bridge Society.

Pete has been divorced since 1979 and now lives within the City of Camarillo. His future plans include lots of travel, lots more photo ops and more and better Web pages.
