Along the Coast of Maine
Portland Head Lighthouse
|
Portland Head is a magnificent 200-year-old lighthouse. It is one of four Colonial-era lights that has never been rebuilt. One of the first laws of the US
Congress was the creation of a Lighthouse Establishment in 1789, at the urging of George Washington. In 1791, Congress appropriated $1500 to complete the Portland Head light.
Portland Head Light has been painted and photographed probably more than
any other lighthouse. The tower is not open for climbing, but the grounds and other structures are open to the public.
