Along the California Coast

Point Bonita Lighthouse
(Text Below)

Built in 1877, the Point Bonita lighthouse clings to a basalt outcropping northeast of the Golden Gate Bridge and is reached by a hiking trail, tunnel and suspension bridge. Many wrecks occured offshore fron this point and one on the rocks below. A heroic keeper descended a rope to reach survivors of that wreck but the rope was too short and he had to climb back up. The suvivors were later rescued by other boats.

The light was automated in 1980 marking the end of an era. Today the Central Coast Keepers Association conducts guided tours including sunset tours twice a month. For information and directions call (415) 331-1540.
