Along the California Coast

            Point Montara Lighthouse   (Text Below)

Two cargo steamers piled up on the shallow ledge offshore, so in 1875 a fog signal was built on this site, 20 miles south of San Francisco. The light tower, atop the 70 foot cliffs, was added on 1900. The buildings are now restored and in 1980 were leased to the American Youth Hostels. Lodging is bunk-bed style and you get to help with the chores. Family bungalows are reservable. There is public access to the grounds from 7:30AM to 9:30AM and 4:30PM to 9:30PM. For information and reservations, call (415) 728-7177.
